Science and modern inventions- a blessing or a curse
No one can deny that science and modern inventions have indeed been a blessing for mankind. We should be grateful to scientists and inventors like Thomas Edison, James Watt and hundreds of other pioneers who carried out innumerable experiments with zeal and perseverance for the inventions of various gadgets and appliances that have helped mankind. If science is a curse it is only because men with a criminal bent of mind misuse it for their own selfish ends.
Take a look at the domestic scene. Can we think about living without electric lights and fans? Is it possible to continue cooking on coal, when one has got used to a gas stove? Can we do without a fridge or a mixer-grinder? Entertainment is no more the same now that we have the cinema, television, video and stereo deck.
Without printing, photocopying, and modern methods of publishing, education would no more be the same. Millions of people can avail themselves of knowledge only because of Johann Gutenberg's pioneering work in the field of printing.
Medical science has eradicated so many dreadful diseases. It is still making tremendous strides in the curing of diseases. There was a time when diseases such as malaria, influenza and tuberculosis were considered incurable. So many forms of cancer are curable today. All this would not have been possible if it were not for the progress made by medical science.
We cannot say that science is a curse. There are people who misuse science for their own nefarious purposes an turn it into a curse. A car is a wonderful invention with many advantages. But a reckless or drunken driver is capable of using it as a weapon of destruction. But when certain unscrupulous scientists and ambitious politicians plot to use atomic energy for destructive purposes, science is dubbed as a curse.
