Abigail Adams: An American Wom
Abigail Adams was a unique woman because she had an education and an interest in politics. She learned how to read, write, and enjoyed reading especially poems. She did all of this at home. She was ahead of her time with many of her ideas. She opposed slavery and believed in equal education for boys and girls, making sure that her own children received a good education. Abigail Adams helped plant the seeds that would start women and men thinking about women's rights and roles in a country that had been founded on the ideals of equality and independence. But most of these ideas did not take place until years later. She should not be known as the wife of one president, (John Adams), and the mother of another ,(John Quincy Adams), but as a woman ahead of her time. What is revolutionary mean? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary it means, constituting or bringing about a major or fundamental change. Was she revolutionary? No, Abigail Adams was not a revolutionary woman. Why not? What Abigail did in her lifetime is an equivalent of a first lady would do ( got idea from class). She met with other politicians like John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, and later George Washington. She also traveled with John, to Paris and to London, when he was a delegate. She was very involved in what was going on in the country even after the revolutionary war. She also met people like John Jay and Martha Washington. She did not meet these people just because of her views on woman’s rights; she met them because of her husbands’ dealings with these people as he working building a foundation to this country. She was a woman that many people respected even John Adams. Abigail's father knew John Adams by working with him and she grew rather close to him starting a wedding. This now made her name Abigail Adams. Their wedding was held on October 25, 1764, a month before her twentieth birthday. John was a lawyer and very often was not at home due to court cases he had to attend to. Abigail was alone in raising her children with the help of the servants. This does not make her revolutionary because there are many women that are taking care of their children by themselves for many other reasons (Ch. 1). For instance, ble house. Though they lived well, the Smiths had no fortune (pg 3). “Abigail's father often worked with his own hands, planting corn and potatoes, gathering hay, sowing barley, or making sure that his sheep received proper care . Abigail, with the help of her family grew a very religious bond between each other and a long lasting friendship”. (Pg3-17)
