             Galileo began his career at the University of Pisa in 1584. By the age of 20 he was studying philosophy and medicine with hopes of becoming a.
             doctor. Galileo did not truly want to become a doctor, but rather it was his father, Vincenzio Galilei who insisted on the idea. Vincenzio wanted him to become a doctor so he become prosperous and provide for the family. One day the talented mathematician Ostillio Ricci confronted Vincenzio about Galileo's talent in mathematics. Vincenzio felt uncertain about his son's educational plans but continued to support Galileo in college for another year.
             Galileo's interests and talents flourished in mathematics and natural philosophy. He is most remembered for his work on free fall, the use of the.
             telescope, and his employment of experimentation. Galileo was a Copernican, a believer in the theories of Nicolas Copernicus. The major premises of Copernicus's theory are that the earth rotates daily on its axis and revolves yearly around the sun. He argued, furthermore, that the planets also circle the sun, and that the earth precesses on its axis (wobbles like a top) as it rotates. Copernicus's ideas may seem elementary, but during his lifetime they were revolutionary, not to be taken lightly.
             In 1606 Galileo heard about a Dutch spyglass which had been shown in Venice at a scientific convention. He improved on the idea and built many stronger.
             telescopes of his own. He shared his discoveries in a book called Message from the Stars. This book of Galileo's discoveries sparked much controversy because Galileo claimed to have seen mountains on the moon and stated that the milky way was made up of tiny stars.
