Life of Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was born to Vincenzio Galilei and Giulia Ammannati on February 15, 1564 in the town of Pisa in Italy. He was the oldest of seven children about most of whom all record is lost. His first teacher was a man by the name of Jacopo Borghini. Around 1575 he and his family moved to Florence. After they settled there he began to attend school at the monastery of Santa Maria in Vallombrosa. After about six years of study there he entered the order although his father was against it. His father promptly attempted to enroll him in the University of Pisa but failed. Galileo then returned to the monastery and continued to study there until 1581 when he was successfully enrolled in the University of Pisa. He entered the school as a medical student. His formal education in astronomy and physics were the lectures of Aristotelian philosophers. His interest in medicine though was very slim and he eventually began to receive instruction in mathematics from outside of his school by a man named Ostilio Ricci who was the mathematician of the Tuscan Court and a friend of his fathers. In 1585, four years after he had entered the university, he left, having never earned a degree.
Galileo has contributed a great deal to modern science and thought. In the field of mechanics his ideas still remain fundamental. He first studied the decent of falling objects along plains of varying inclinations. From this study he created the law that governed the amount of distance traveled and the time spent in free fall. This law, the law of falling bodies, states that: space traversed by a body falling along an incline plane is directly proportional to the square of the time of fall. He also studied the movement of pendulums.
One of Galileo's greatest accomplishments was the creation of the telescope. He built his first telescope in the early 1600's out of ebony and ivory and a 30mm lens. Using this telescope he was able to discover the moons of Jupiter.
