Review Of The Woman Warrior

When I first picked up the book and read the title, The Woman Warrior, I feared for my life that this was going to be another boring book that had been assigned because it was the only book the professor could find that was dealing with the material we cover in class. I was utterly wrong! .
The book in general was put together nicely and was well written in my opinion. I really enjoyed the chapter entitled, "The White Tigers". It amazed me to read how the little girl was taken from her home and trained for many years to become a warrior just like a man would be. It was fun not knowing what she was going to run into next once she actually went on her journey where the white tigers were. I also enjoyed the chapter which talks about the mother going through school to become a doctor. I was shocked at how she described the delivering of the babies and how they would sometimes be killed or were confused with being demons or pigs. The part where she began fighting with the ghosts and scaring them away was really intriguing. She believed that she could do anything and she really could. .
When Moon Orchid finally came to the United States she changed to a completely different person or so it seemed in this new environment. She began to deteriorate and become afraid which played on her both mentally and physically. It was strange how everyone encouraged her to go back to see her husband and make her think that she could just pick up where they left off when he left China. .
The last chapter confused me a little. I didn't understand what the children not being able to talk had to do with the whole story. I guess it has something to do with the ghosts. The part where she tortures the other Chinese child because she won't talk was interesting. And then how she ended up becoming sick after all that shows a bit of belief in a karma type situation.
Overall the book helped me to understand the Chinese family, culture, beliefs and way of life that the typical Chinese face that I would otherwise not know much about.
