Families are said to be “the root of every living soul”. This tells us that our families are basically what brought us into being, what gave us life, what shaped our values and beliefs, and what ultimately launched us towards our own independence. Another aspect of family life that is setting it severely into decline is emotional distance between family members. Families are getting farther and farther away from each other mentally, in ways such as not communicating as well as they once did, or not sitting down together for family meals. The average teenager in this day and age spends less than ten minutes a week talking to his or her parents. As Kin Hubbard puts it, “There is plenty of peace in any home where the family doesn’t make the mistake of trying to get together.” This is very true of households today. Many families don’t like to get together around the table for meals because they just fight too much. They think it would be much more peaceful if the family members interacted as little as possible. In this definition, the family is seen as mainly a nuisance; not something that is good to have around.

As I mentioned before, the family of today is much different than the family of 50 years ago. It is much more hardened, and much more deprived of love and affection. As George Burns puts it, “Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.” This quote was meant as a joke at the time, but it has ironically become reality nowada
