In this story, Calixta feels free from all the restrictions her marriage has on her. The story reads, “[H]er lips seemed in a manner to be free to be tasted, as well as her round, white throat, and her white breasts” (860). Alone at home she feels free from her responsibilities as a mother and a wife. This freedom causes her to make some bad choices. However, being free is what every woman wants, it does not always lead to happiness. Although she abuses her freedoms, she is still happy that she made her own decision.

Men in this time were in the ones in control; women had little opportunity for input, if any. Chopin exposes these truths in her stories. She reveals how delighted the woman is when she recognizes the opportunities that are open to her at her husband’s death. She uses the phrase “the joy that kills” (863) to show how excited the woman is now that she thinks she is free. Freedom is what women wanted. They wanted to be treated as equals and not as servants to their husbands. Women did not know how to be their own person or if they could make decisions, but they still wanted the community to treat them the same as a man. Women today are still not treated as men are, but they have acquired more rights than the Chopin writes of in her stories.

In this story, Chopin’s main character is a woman today’s society would call a homemaker. She is at home ‘working’ while her husband is away earning money for the family.
