Literary Analysis of "A Mystery of Herosim" The theme of "A Mystery of Herosim" is the foolishness and pointlessness of war. Through his use of symbolism, Crane shows how war costs a very high price to accomplish its trivial goal. The story follows the soldier Collins on his impulsive journey to get water from a well across a dangerous field. Although Collins could easily be killed in doing this, he ... way back from the well with a bucket of water, Collins stops to give some to a dying soldier. Once back, two lieutenants carelessly spill the water that Collins could have died for. These thre...

Ernest Hemingway diverges from the path of the typical protagonist in an initiation story with "Indian Camp." Campbell suggests that most initiation stories end with an "epiphany" of some kind which signals the maturing process in the protagonist. Though much of the story does follow the orthodox pattern of an initiation, Nick, the protagonist in "Indian Camp," does not come to such a realization in the end. His maturing process remains incomplete in this initiation. Though all of Campbell"s criteria for being an initiation story is not present in "Indian Camp," this story unarguably represent...

Edgar Allan Poe's "A Dream within a Dream" deals with a man's struggle to find out the meaning of life. This poem seems to be about a man parting from his lover. The poem is in first person narrative and the speaker seems to be the man. The audience is mainly the people reading that poem however, Poe may have targeted a more gothic audience. The play helps communicate how relationships are two sided. It also helps illustrate how people come from different walks of life. Several examples of how this was illustrated throughout the play is when Purdue lies to Bid about where she's staying and why she's there. When if she would have told her she was living in the woman's home may have offered her a place to live sooner. Also, when Bid did what she thought was best by letting her ex-husband take her daughter away It seemed like the best option. However, when you saw it from Purdue's point of view, as a daughter who was left behind it d...

The Walrus and the Carpenter Life is about choices. The paths we choose to walk are diverse. They may end in good or bad scenarios, depending on the informed or uninformed choices that we make. As we have all heard, "Life is what you make of it". This saying is sure, and worthy of full acceptance, yet, what we make of life, may depend upon the hand we are dealt, or the peers we surround ourselves with. In this poem we see the respect for age and age related wisdom. This wisdom is divided, as we see, into wisdom associated with group-oriented knowledge, as the Old oyster exerts, or should be ab...

Throughout history philosophers and authors have attempted to convey their idea of a perfect and happy society. Those same people have preached about finding the ultimate truth and using that to find ultimate happiness. The two however do not directly coincide together for there is much room to doubt where to find this and putting forth this philosophy to everyday life. Since there is no previous record of ultimate truth as well as ultimate happiness how does one achieve this and in what form does Aldous Huxley convey this message through Brave New World because in my understanding, his view i...

Since youth, we've been told that there are certain expectations that need to be met, and certain morals that must be followed throughout one's life. This has always been especially true for women in the 1900's. The roles of women in the early 19th century were mainly at home, where they were expected to cook, clean and care for the children. However, going into the 1940's, roles of women were changing. If women were not married and taking care of their household, then they were expected to be educated and working. Otherwise, they were often shamed and frowned upon in society. Often, people ge...

"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity, and my eyes burned with anguish and anger." This last passage from the story "Araby" by James Joyce from Dubliners has a great amount of significance in showing and telling us the theme of the story. The theme that emerges out of this final image of despair at the end of "Araby" is hopelessness and entrapment because the story shows the narrator, who remains unknown, feels trapped and does not have a sense of identity due to the endless routine given in the environment he lives in. The narrator feels a sense ...

Although Bub narrates his own story, he does not put himself in a good light. He comes off as glib, shallow and immature. His snide comments depict someone unwilling to look beyond stereotypes for a deeper understanding of people or circumstances. This is most obvious in his thoughts about blind people. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to. Carver illustrates Bub's rejection of intimacy in a variety of ways. First, he doesn't c...

500 Days of Summer, a romantic comedy, and a film directed by Marc Webb is a greatly evoked story about how life truly is not what society would like for it to be; and that life is more or less controlled by fate. The captured essence of human life, music, and the location all contribute to how great the movie really is. It also grabs the viewers in a relatable aspect, keeping them guessing till the very end. Tom is an intelligent, inattentive, and creative man, but his introduction into sad British pop music and a complete misreading of the movie The Graduate may have negatively influenced hi...

A person's life is full of tragedies and experiences. As Don Herold once stated, "Unhappiness is not knowing what we want and killing ourselves to get it"." This appalling quote perfectly represents the lives and the tragic ending of the lives of Timothy Treadwell and of Christopher McCandless. The insightful documentary "Grizzly Man" and the book "Into the Wild"" are both about two men who are unhappy in the world they live in and believe they can make a difference in their lives by finding some peace and solitude in nature. "The Road Not Taken " by Robert Frost is famous for being misinterpreted. It seems, however, that its fame has failed to reveal its true meaning. If one were to read through the poem only once, it would seem to showcase free will and the beauty in making unique, divergent decisions. When read through again, the facade is lifted and the realism of the poem becomes clear. Frost uses cynical, dramatic irony to convey his opinion that people place too much value on the decisions they make throughout their lives, that they spend too much time worrying about which ones are the right decisions when, ...
