Weapons Of Mass Destruction

.
Simon, and Johnson do a wonderful job of correlating the information of what is found in the article, and giving you something somewhat tangible so you can relate even more to the issue. A timeline featured in the article (16,17), allows you to see the progression of WMD and it's effect on the persons targeted. Along with some startling numbers you begin to get the sense that this is not an infantile epidemic. As far back as World War One you have countries using forms of deadly gas to try and ensure victory. This was surprising to me because I had assumed that this was a relatively young problem. Of course nobody can have concrete numbers on the amount of casualties inflicted, but I think the article succeeded in putting forth these cataclysmic events, and the magnitude of their effects. .
I was particularly surprised to find out that Russian Authorities have admitted that since 1991, there have been at least 23 attempts to steal fissle material from nuclear facilities and stockpiles. Simon balances this inevitable feeling of his reader's uneasiness with examples of programs put in place to reduce and dispose of such material, including the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Seemingly easy means of obtaining highly dangerous materials was highlighted by an example of three Greenpeace activists boarding a British-flagged carrier containing radioactive waste. It is occurrences like these, which make me somewhat frightened, and leery of how safe we really are. I would have liked for Simon to elaborate more on incidents like this but the article was vague in that respect. .
To a novice studying WMD, an extensive chart (22,23) outlines numerous forms of biological, chemical, and nuclear weaponry, and their characteristics, including symptoms, treatment, and long and short term effects, would serve as an invaluable tool in gaining a mastery of the subject. Lynn Johnson, the photographer for the article, does a splendid job of showing facets related to the article across the board.
