"Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for our entertainment. " This is the slogan for PETA, People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals. There are many reasons why the government should enforce stricter laws and punishments for animal abusers. Animal abuse doesn't only hurt the animals, but it also shows signs of future violence towards humans. Criminals convicted of abusing animals often receive only a small fine, are put on probation or receive some equally ineffective punishment. This causes a false belief that it's not that bad to kill or torture an animal.
Albert DeSalvo, Theodore Bundy, David Brekowitz and Jefferey Dahmer are all serial killers who had abused animals. Dahmer's neighbors saw cut up animals, frogs and cats staked to trees, and a mutilated body of a dog. When he was a kid Dahmer would strip the skin off animals with acid. Dahmer admitted to killing 17 people. .
In their report, Childhood Cruelty Towards Animals Among Criminals and Noncriminals, Stephen R. Kellert and Alan R. Felthous stated that "Childhood cruelty towards animals occurred to a significantly greater degree among aggressive criminals than among nonaggressive criminals and non criminals. The findings were based on separate interviews with 152 criminals and noncriminals in Kansas and Connecticut.
Kellert and Felthous encountered the following motives for animal cruelty: to control an animal, to retaliate against an animal, to satisfy a prejudice against a species or breed, to express aggression through an animal, to shock people, to retaliate against another person and nonspecific sadism. These are all psychological behaviors that need to be discussed with professional counselors. This is not normal behavior.
Ensuring that animal abusers are given appropriate punishments is very important, particularly when it concerns children-whether or not the child is the actual perpetrator.
