Puritans

 

            I am writing you this letter because I want to let you know how I am doing and tell you about some of the hardships we have encountered throughout our journey to freedom. It was a long hard trip with many ups and downs, but we made it. .
             This whole voyage took place because we were determined to find a place where our .
             religious views and practices would be free from persecution. It all started when in 1625 when James I died and Charles I inherited his throne. Charles had Catholic sympathies and had strong feelings for the Anglican High Church, the Church of England. The Church of England became more and more the church of the royal and elite and made us Puritans and Protestants became the church of the common man. He married a Catholic, the Princess Henrietta Maria, of France, only making the problem worse. .
             In just a few years, us, who had not been Separatists, as the Pilgrims of 1620 were, had enough of Charles I and his anti-church policies. We were ready to move from England if that was what it took to attain our goals.
             As Puritans we believe in the ideas of John Calvin which asserts the basic sinfulness of humankind but it also states that God at the beginning of time had predestined all events and had chosen all to be saved in heaven and all to be lost in hell. We believe all things originate with God and he is everywhere. The Church of England were not practicing these beliefs and we didn't agree. .
             We didn't have any Intentions of breaking away from the Anglican church and just wanted to purify the church to match Christianity as it had been in the time of Christ. We think the Church of England retained too many Roman Catholic beliefs and that the priests and bishops have to much authority and have no respect for teachings in the bible. We just want to establish a colony based on Bible law.
