Youth Poems

The unicorn is described in full detail including their gold horns which show the beauty of being young. The use of these vibrant descriptions allows for a contrast between the marvel of the unicorn and the sad mood that has been set.
The theme of this poem is to live life to the fullest and not take opportunities for granted because later in life these "unicorns" will not be around and one may regret it. The irony of the poem, however, is that unicorns are supposed to be free, and when she speaks of how she should have caught it, she might deep down realize that she was not supposed to catch it, but really she only wonders what would have happened it she had. It is the "what-ifs" that often make life so hard.
"The Child's Sight" by Hy Sobiloff, demonstrates the power a child has to give adults another chance or reminder of childhood. It is written in the point of view of an adult who attempts to learn how to be like a child, to use imagination and curiosity and to make things that are normally ignored, new and exciting.
The poem uses a lot of strong descriptions such as the "celestial gibberish" of child speech and the "purple velvet bee". It also demonstrates the imagination of a child: .
"I pick up wood pieces from the ground and see shapes into them." .
"The child is a little inspector when it crawls.".
The reader can picture these two situations, a child examining an ordinary object as if it is suddenly extraordinary. This piece of writing contains two very powerful lines at the beginning and end of the poem:.
"The child's wisdom is in saying, they say what they see when they see it.".
"They have given me back the bliss of my senses".
These two lines capture the power that children have which was mentioned earlier. They have a wisdom that adults are incapable of because adults are corrupted with knowledge which effects their decisions, sometimes in a good way but sometimes not. With this childish wisdom they have the power to remind adults about the simplicities in life which at one time were so appealing.
