             Janie is soon married off to Logan Killicks, she is aware that she does not love him but assume it will come in time. Janie goes to her Nanny two months later, in question of why she does not love Logan yet, Nanny sends her back on her way. Nanny prays to God to watch over Janie and a month later she dies. Things with Logan and Janie progressively get worse and Logan begins to start expecting Janie to help with the manual labor, calling her spoiled he leaves to buy another mule so Janie would be able to help. While Logan is gone she sees a well-dressed man by the name of Joe Starks walking down the road. Logan and Janie get to know one another and agree on a time and place to meet, if Janie would want to leave with him. Logan and Janie argue that night and Janie threatens to leave, in retaliation Logan belittles Janie more. The next morning the two argue once again and Janie leaves for the desired meeting place to be with Joe Stark. Joe and Janie marry at the first opportunity and leave for a new town that Joe wants to be mayor of.
             Jody, also known as Joe, and Janie arrive in the new Florida town, it is less than what they had expected, just a dozen shacks. Joe introduces himself to two men, Lee Coker and Amos Hicks, of the town called Eatonville. Eatonville consists of only 50 acres of land, Joe buys another 200 acres for the town from Captain Eaton, the man responsible for the first 50 acres of land. Jody reveals his plans to build a store and a post office and hires Taylor, the town's original spokesperson, and Coker to build the store. Jody is soon inducted to mayor and his wife Janie is asked to make a speech but Jody prevents her from doing so. Janie is angered by the resentment of her husband but keeps silent. Joe orders a new lamppost for the new town and it becomes the object becomes a source of pride, there is a big party and feast to go along with the lighting. The town soon begins to grow apart and Janie becomes the person of respect and jealousy.
