"Oh Pamela, that's the good thing about being halved; that one would understands the sorrow of every person and thing in the world at its own incompleteness. I was whole and I did not understand, and moved about deaf and unfeeling amid the pain and sorrow all round us, in places where as a whole person one would least think to find it." (Calvino, Italo 1998 Our Ancestors Random House, Sydney).
This quote shows that as a whole person, other people do not think about the feelings of other people and it is only until you are no longer a whole person in this case with the Viscount, that you truly understand what other people feel and that there is sorrow all around. The theme of this story is, through conflict, how two sides of the human being come together as equals after much pain and anguish. .
Frodo Baggins on his journey through Middle Earth is faced with much conflict and with a strong will, overcomes it all. Anyone else could have been chosen to be ringbearer on the journey to Mordor but Frodo, with such a kind and caring, true heart is chosen by his uncle Bilbo Baggins who took the journey to Middle Earth years before. Along Frodo's journey he meets other characters sworn to protect him no matter the situation. As the power of the ring grows stronger and stronger by the day, Frodo's travels become harder and harder. .
"Then the eye began to race, searching this way and that; and Frodo knew with certainty and horror that among the many things it sought he himself was one. But he also knew that it could not see him - not yet, not unless he willed it. The Ring that hung upon its chain about his neck grew heavy, heavier than a great stone, and his head was dragged downwards.".
This quote shows the immense power the ring has and the great dangers that are out there trying to make Frodo succumb to its power. Not only does he have to battle obstacles thrown at him with orcs but also his mental stability along the way.
