Q. Narrative Continuity and Rupture, and Their Effects Regar

Nolan emphasizes the idea of continuity by integrating the black and white scenes with the colour scenes in the final scene which is ironically the scene of departure. This unification between scenes symbolises a large loop from the end to the beginning which will be further emphasized and continued through multiple viewings. The cyclical nature of the loop gives birth to implications that continuity is the source of causality, the inter-relation between cause and effect. This principle implies that nothing can exist or happen without a cause. This is highly relevant to Memento, with regard to the loop and the basis of repetition. The looping of primarily the colour scenes represents continuity and its effects over both Leonard's perception of time and time in itself. The loops which are circular in form initiate a sequence of events which progress and then return to their state of origin. These loops are symbolic of Leonard's absence of short term memory, and subsequently his inability to feel time "how can I heal if I can't feel time?- Members can thus relate this absence of linearity to the circle of life, or more simply the looping effect of 24 hour days, Sunday to Saturday, 52 weeks a year. Furthermore, the loop acts as a metaphor for the unobtainable quest for memory, desire and consequently truth. Leonard's thoughts in the final colour scene convey this through his need "to believe-.
I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world is still here.
Hence, Leonard's pursuit to "believe- is catalysed via the structural continuity of narrative and the looping effect of scenes.
Narrative rupture within Memento encourages an active spectatorship and multiple viewings. The fragmentation created by the combination of scenes in reverse chronology in addition to the intricate editing play large roles in disorientating viewers.
