The Crucible

 

            Abigail Williams is one of the major characters in the play, The Crucible. She is an orphan living with her uncle Parris who is the reverend in Salem. At this time she is about 17 years old. She is not one of the highly looked upon people since she is an orphan, a child, and rumors had been going on about her regarding her previous job. She worked for Mr. and Mrs. John Proctor. Mrs. Proctor fired her because Abigail and John had an affair. Abigail is first questioned when she and her friends come back from dancing in the woods and her cousin is in a trance. The townspeople become suspicious and think this is the devil's work.
             Abigail started to show her true colors when accused of witchcraft she swore she had nothing to do with it and pointed her finger at Tituba. She worried about how this would affect her name and reputation. At this point all the girls swore they weren't involved in witchcraft and started accusing other people in Salem.
             Abigail is a strong minded and deceitful person. She strives for power. She will do anything to get what she wants. One of the accused was John Proctors wife Elizabeth. Abigail accused Elizabeth thinking that John would come back to her. She tried tempting John, but he refused because he wanted to stay true to his wife, so she accused Elizabeth on spite. She is very jealous of the relationship between John and Elizabeth and will do anything to turn John's love onto her.
             Abigail is evil she puts innocent people's lives and even her on friends on the line to save herself. She lies and manipulates the townspeople and even the mighty judges into believing her. She very persuasive and tells the court all the things that the people she has condemned tried to do to her. She even makes her body cold with her will power. She is a terrific actress. She pretended to pass out, and choke. She can seem as innocent as a lamb one minute and trait as a snake the next.
