Do Kids Need Religion?

"Children need some kind of structure and feedback, such as religion, to develop values in their lives" (Ochieng 94). This statement is a strong testament to my belief that, children do need to be introduced to religion. Brandt opposes my beliefs throughout his essay, Do Kids Need Religion? He believes that, "children can be taught values and courage without religion" (Brandt 190). Should children be forced into religious beliefs? If religion is introduced and forced onto a child, it may be rejected, resulting in rebellion. Children should be introduced to religion and make a decision when they are mature enough. Brandt admits, "To raise children in a culture without at least exposing them to its religious traditions, may be doing them a disservice" (195). Although Brandt objects most ways of religion, he expresses the need of at least introducing children to religion. .
"While food nourishes the body, religion nourishes the soul. You, the parents give the food to develop the bodies, God through a life of religion, nourishes the soul" (Ochieng 98). This represents the need to be introduced to some kind of religion or faith for a child to grow. There is an importance of using their minds and hearts to determine what is right. Some form of religion should be introduced to give a child knowledge to base decisions on. The Church, God and the afterlife should be introduced to the child to well understand his culture and the culture of others. I do not believe without faith a child will not learn morals or values, but religion will enhance their drive to want to be a better person. Parents still should be a part of creating moral values for their children to live by. Religion gives children a support system to fall back on when their parents or others are not there for them. It provides many answers to questions that would otherwise go unknown. It gives answers to children who are confused on what is happening in their surroundings, such as death.
