Do Kids Need Religion

Anthony Brandt: Do Kids Need Religion?.
This article describes one man's findings and observations when trying to decide whether or not children should be exposed to religion. He writes this article in hopes of deciding how to raise his own children. Religion is a highly debated and very sensitive subject in all communities. Even more controversy comes into play when discussing children and whether or not religion should be included in their upbringings. He offers that many parents are in the dark when it comes to teaching religion to their children. They don't want to force religion on their kids but at the same time don't want to hold them back from it if it is something they wish to pursue. He writes that parents who were not raised strictly religious contemplate their own state of religious belief in these situations.
He writes of his own confusion during the time that he was raising his daughter and the problems he faced. He uses specific examples of his own experience to illustrate his dilemma. His strongest example comes from his daughter asking questions about the death of her two best friends when she was very young. He asks what kind of comfort and security a secular society could offer his daughter or any child who losses a loved one. He very insightfully presents both the religious and non-religious options on the issue and debates with himself over them. .
Brandt's opinion is that many will say that religion is a necessary part of a child's upbringing, and many will disagree; however no one can be sure of the effect a religious education will have on any certain child. Brandt also claims that all people must have some form of meaning or validity for their lives in order to live them out. He doesn't want answers he simplywants to teach people how to ask the right questions?. He says that maybe a good appreciation of religion is what is needed rather than a demand that a child be fully involved in it.
