Tragedy genres are about exceptional people: kings, queens, princes, leaders and soldiers - exceptional or unusual people in exceptional or unusual situations. Othello easily fits this definition as he is the General of Venice. The tragic genre depicts characters of a benevolent nature to suffer the consequences of an evil force. In Othello, we see Iago as the embodiment of evil who is the catalyst for most of the chaos which occurs in the play and his character is sometimes compared to the devil.
Othello is proud of the endurances the war has brought upon him and, although not being aware of being manipulated, is in control of his every move throughout the play. In Act I, Scene Two, Othello and Brabantio have a brawl, yet we see Othello remain calm and collected in reaction to Brabantio's speech. He says, "Hold your hands, both of you of my inclining and the rest. Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it without a prompter". This line displays the astonishing power of Othello's words. Othello's nature is dark in many ways than one; not only is he dark in skin colour, but also because his whole persona is very mysterious, emphasized by his belief that magic brewing everywhere. However, he is not very observant in nature which aids Iago in his schemes, as they are easy to get past him. In this sense, Othello is nave because he is not aware of Iago's schemes against him and continues to deem Iago as his trusty ensign when he is actually steering Othello into his own demise. Nor is Othello aware of the fact that Iago is indeed using him for his own benefit. However, his naivety is rendered ironic due to the dangers and encounters Othello has been involved in, as he is ignorant of the corrupt nature of other people. Othello's trusting nature gets the better of his judgements which he puts forth almost too easily, and misplaces it somewhat, especially in the case of Iago. .
After Iago has raised Othello's suspicions about his wife's infidelity, Othello seems to have begun to believe that he is barbaric, lacking "those soft parts of conversation.
