Reporting Crimes on College Campuses

Crime is an important issue which has been both a problem in the past and is currently a problem through out the world today. It has been noted that the crimes which take place on college campuses, have also been an issue, causing the university crime rates to increase over the past few years. After reading "Crime and Delinquency", a scholarly article written by Pamela Wilcox, Carol E. Jordan, and Adam J. Pritchard, it was addressed that several universities tend to under report campus crime causing the students to not be fully informed about the criminal events, which have taken place on and off campus. However, at the University of Georgia students are notified of several on and off campus crimes either through email, the crime report in the school newspaper, the Red and Black, or through the UGA alert system. Even though there has been an advance in technology and security over the past years, allowing for college students to be more easily notified of the surrounding criminal acts, university crime rates tend to occur regardless due to the atmosphere and the variety of opportunities around the campus. .
The reporting of criminal acts on college campuses is an important issue; however, there is almost no way to tell what percent of campus crimes go unreported, and each universities' crime rate is only an approximate percent to what their actual crime rate should be. According to "The Campus Violence White Paper", a scholarly article written by Joetta L. Carr who has a PhD from Western Michigan University, "In an important study of 3,400 students randomly selected from 12 colleges and universities.only 25% of campus crimes were reported to any authority across all offenses."(Carr pg. 307). Some reasons for the students not reporting several of the crimes were because the students felt that, "these crimes were too minor, private matter, and not clear it was a crime"(Carr 307). Rather than the universities taking the entire blame of lack of reporting campus crime, it seems that the several students whom failed to report the crimes which happened to them, to the university, would also be to blame.
