Helping Injured Athletes Back to the Field

As athletes encounter an injury at any time of during their year, the amount of time remaining in the year is considered in their evaluation of how to feel and approach the injury situation (Gaymen & Crossman, 2003).
Many athletes would view a pre-season injury as the best time to get injured because they have the maximal time to recover in time to play the current season or the next season. On the other hand, feelings of frustration and anger may take place during a pre-season injury because it can affect the athlete's ability to become more cohesive with team members. It is also a time to work on skills and conditioning which helps athletes gain confidence before they begin their season. Mid season injuries become steadily worse psychologically because an athlete has less time to recover and be able to play the end of the season with the rest of their team. Not only are they dealing with the frustration and disappointment of being injured, but also the loss of conditioning and becoming stronger players will be a bigger disappointment if they return from injury. Further, some players feel they start to mesh better with teammates and build stronger relationships at this point of the season. .
The end of the season is a very important time for an athlete and his team. Ending strong is particularly important for an athlete because every athlete wants to have the opportunity to take his team to the next level. An injured athlete may feel that he is jeopardizing his team's ability to succeed at a critical time. At this time, an athlete is not prepared for the season to end, and it becomes emotionally difficult. If it is the injured athlete's final year of playing, the injury becomes potentially career-ending and negative thoughts and emotions will follow (Gaymen & Crossman, 2003). There is very little motivation for an athlete at this time and this will adversely affect the psychological healing process as well as the rehabilitation process because it is hard for an athlete to find inspiration when strong feelings of helplessness because there is no way the athlete will be able in time to help his team.
