Psalm 84 - Finding Our Home with God

The sons of Korah were a guild of temple musicians who were previously doorkeepers in the temple. The Thompson-Chain Reference Study Bible says there are 11 Psalms written to the sons of Korah and does not mention them as an author of any of the Psalms.(p2066) According to Davidson these men stand out as a notable example of the sovereign mercy of God. He says this because they were descendants of men who broke into revolt against Moses. In the bible, the book of Numbers tells the story of the defiant men being consumed by a fire, but that their children were spared. .
Davidson says, "Therefore we must consider this Psalm to be a joyful celebration of the grace of God, who instead of cutting them off in judgment, brought them to himself and gave them a place of favor in his own dwelling." It also is believed that this Psalm was used as the hymnbook of the second temple. Gunkel says "The Psalms were sung at particular occasions that celebrated Jerusalem's majesty and future significance" in his studies. Another view I found in Edge Induced Cohesion, is that the sons of Korah wrote this Psalm making it a very personal ode of devotion to God, and extraordinary and heartfelt psalm of praise despite the sorrows of life. Some believe this Psalm was written around autumn after the first rains broke the drought of summer. Although the authorship is not positive in one direction, it is certain this Psalm is a song of praise to God honoring his temple. .
What is the genre of the Psalm?.
The book of Psalms is a poetic book. The 84th Psalm is said to be a praise song to God. It is also referred to as the Song of Zion. In Herman Gunkel's classification of this Psalm, he says this Psalm lacks proper introduction, praises Yaweh and by praising Jerusalem, addressing the Holy Place, and calls down blessing upon it. There are three main topics discussed here: The beauty of God's dwelling place is the temple.
