Soldier's Home by Ernest Hemingway

The short story "Soldier's Home,"" by Ernest Hemingway, is about a soldier named Krebs who reveals the shock of re-entry into life after war. His world seems so difficult. Krebs just wanted a simple life so he could relax and avoid talking about his war experiences, because his faith was removed by the war. His mother tried to help her son to move on life by believing in faith. Ernest Hemingway's theme in "Soldier's Home " is that it is important to have faith so you can overcome difficult situations in life. .
Krebs is the central character in the story who didn't keep faith in himself when he came back from war. Before the war, he was a college student and Hemingway includes a picture of, "him among his fraternity brothers, all of them wearing exactly the same height and style collar " (Hemingway,133). In that time he had a lot of faith in himself shown by his active and social life. Krebs was part of the military who got drafted to go to WWI. After he came back from WWI he was a different person. He became antisocial. He didn't even communicate with his parents. He was like a ghost. Krebs was part of a war event named, "Belleau Wood, Soissons, the Champagne, St. Mihiel, and in the Argonne,"" (Hemingway,133) which was one of the violent war events that occurred in WWI. He lost faith in human beings because he saw cruel things while he was in war and he lost sight of humanity. Not just only that, but during the war he lost some his close friends as well. From not talking about his experience he just became antisocial so he could escape from the past. Hel lost faith in himself after that war which led him to not communicate with people around him.
On the other hand, Kreb's mother kept faith for her son, as she says to Krebs, "I've worried about you so much, Harold . I know the temptations you must have been exposed to. I know how weak men are. I know what your own dear grandfather, my own father, told us about Civil War and I have prayed for you"" (Hemingway,137).
