Long Gun Registry Pros and Cons.
Both the Canadian Police Association and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police have spoken in support of the gun registry. They say it reduces the misuse of guns and makes it easier for police to track illegal guns. Police officers check the gun registry database about 6500 times a day, and use it to check whether they might expect to be met by a gun when responding to a domestic disturbance or break-in, to keep recreational guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, and to apply for search warrants and wire-taps. They believe that this would help prevent deaths that are caused by firearms.
Opponents of the gun registry say there are better ways to control the illegal use of weapons, including tougher sentences for gun crimes, controlling imports, and tightening border security.
