             What is Colon Cancer? .
Cancer is a group of abnormal cells, known as a tumor, that grow uncontrollably. Cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, which arises in the lining of the large intestine and rectum. The colon and rectum are parts of the body's digestive system, which removes nutrients from food and stores waste until it passes out of the body. Together, the colon and rectum form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine. The colon is longest part of the large intestine. The rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine closest to the anus. .
             Stages of Colon Cancer.
If a person is diagnosed with colon cancer, more tests will be done to see if the cancer has spread. This is sometimes called staging. .
Stages of colon cancer are: .
Stage 0: Very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine.
Stage I: Cancer is in the inner layers of the colon.
Stage II: Cancer has spread through the muscle wall of the colon.
Stage III: Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
Stage IV: Cancer has spread to other organs outside the colon.
             Incidences .
According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that there were 102,480 new cases of colon cancer in 2013 (50,090 male, 52,390 female), and 50,830 deaths (26,300 male, 24,530 female). Colon cancer is the second most common cancer death in the United States. Early diagnosis, though, can lead to a complete cure. (Cancer Facts & Figures 2013).
The number of new colon cancer cases and the number of deaths from colon cancer are both decreasing a little bit each year.
