Overview of Nationalism and Fascism

 

The entire film clearly depicts national unity and social unity. The first scene portrays the vibrant Hitler Youth eating, fighting, washing, laughing, singing and working together. .
             The fact these youths came from different classes and backgrounds clearly brings out the idea of social and national unity. Later in the film in a speech to the youth, Hitler says that in the future, the country does not need cliques and classes. Hitler stresses that we want a united country. The other scene that clearly conveys a strong sense national unity is one in which Hitler speak to over 50,000 laborers. As a group, the laborers went through their exercises and spoke in utter unison. In a speech to these laborers, Hitler declares that the idea of labor will no longer be a segregating one but one that unites the people. .
             Therefore, throughout the entire film what ultimately united all German children, men and women was their citizenship as Germans excluding homosexuals, Gypsies, political dissidents and Jews. Riefenstahl's cinematographic skills strengthen a sense of unity. Riefenstahl achieves the notion of national and social unity in his film; thematically the large procession sequences confirm the notion that Nazi Germany is a marching, massed line of men. Additionally, one of the Riefenstahl's most unrelenting and successful motifs is the ocean of flags which symbolizes uniformity of the landscape whereas denoting a sense of common identity. As a result, the idea of unity was also evident to the audience of the film than those who attended the rally, because the film successfully uses cinematographic skills to persistently direct the attention of the audience to the theme of unity. .
             The film exalted Nazism by portraying it as a movement which promoted German unity. Further, the film is deliberately free of any reference to the vices which we currently associate with Nazi doctrine. The speeches, for instance were edited to the most general statements regarding solidarity and growth.
