Conditions and Treatments of Sleep Deprivation

 

If this disorder goes untreated the person can stop breathing repeatedly during the night sometimes up to a hundred times ("Sleep Disorders."). Just like there are different types of insomnia, there are two different types of sleep apnea. The first type is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) which is the most common. OSA is caused by the blockage of the airway passage , this usually happens when the soft tissue of the rear of the throat collapses ("Sleep Disorders."). The other type of sleep apnea is Central Sleep Apnea, this is when the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to send signals to the muscles to breathe. Restless leg Syndrome, (RLS) is another common sleep disorder which causes "tingling, pulling, creeping or even painful sensations in the legs at night" ("Sleep Disorders."). You can get RLS just by resting, lying down, or sitting for long periods of time. It usually occurs in the evening making sleep extremely difficult. The last common sleeping disorder is called Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a "neurological disorder of sleep regulation that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness" ("Sleep Disorders."). Narcolepsy is the one sleep disorder that usually starts in people at the ages of 15-25. The other above discussed disorders usually start later in life. .
             There are four main contributing factors that cause sleep disorders; these causes can be put into four different groups, "physical, medical, psychiatric, and environmental" (WebMD). All of these factors play a major role into ones everyday life. Those who have asthma or other conditions that make it difficult to breathe have a physical cause to a sleeping disorder. By having asthma it, "may cause wheezing, coughing, and it can cause problems breathing while sleeping or attempting to sleep (www.sleepdisorders). There are many other physical disorders that can cause difficulty sleeping such as diabetes, restless leg syndrome, and some neurological issues.
