Children, Education and Divorce

There are some possible ethical issues for the idea about a survey on children and how their education has been impacted from their parents divorce. One possible issue comes from the fact that the children who are participating are under the age of consent and because of this, they cannot give their consent to complete the survey. Their parents would have to give consent and this could become an issue as well because the parents may not want their children to give out information about their separation.
The possible harm that could come from the survey is that it may make the children who are participating upset since they will have to think about their parents separation. Although confidentiality should not be an issue, with the participants remaining anonymous, the children participating will be revealing very personal information such as when their parents became separated and how their grades changed following the separation. The benefits of the research will be that the research could show if there is a possible link between the separation of parents and the grades their children receive. This could lead to the parents trying to become more active in their children's education or the children possibly receiving the help they need to feel better about the separation.
In order to have the research get approved by the IRB, a consent form has to be created that will be understandable to the parents, who would be the people that would sign it. The risks of the research would have to be kept at a minimum and privacy would have to be a priority. Since the names of the participants will not be recorded, it will show that privacy could be kept in this research survey and privacy will not be too much of an issue. The actual survey may have to be looked at to see what information is going to be collected from it.
             Results and Conclusions.
The hypothesis for this research project is the separation of parents will have a negative impact on children's education.
