Biotechnology - Extending Our Life Expectancy

Farmers have always tried to use information discovered by Gregor Mendel about genetics to predict the pattern of inherited characteristics to help them control the genes their plants have.  With advancements in genetic engineering have made it possible to express proteins in plants to become more resistant to insects that will eat the farmer's plants or chemicals that could kill the plant (Brown, 2013). These plants are Genetically Modified organisms, which means there is a scientist that through genetic engineering has altered DNA (Brown, 2013). An example of a genetically engineered plant is Bt-corn.  Bt-corn produces a toxin that kills caterpillars that try to feed on the corn (Brown, 2013). .
Green biotechnology has found a way to clone plants with the specific gene that has genetically altered to keep plants with that same gene (Brown 2013). Plants can be induced to the ability of creating an entire organism.  The plant is given different hormones to create masses of cells without a purpose in the plant (Brown 2013). Then these cells are taken and used to clone that plant in order make the group of plants more drug resistant. Although this process may be expensive an increase in higher disease resistance may offset the cost (Brown 2013). Green biotechnology has been used is genetically engineer plants to create medicines and vaccinations. Golden rice has been genetically engineered with certain proteins that help prevent blindness. Scientist is learning how to genetically engineer plants to carry vaccinations that can vaccinate people who eat the food (Brown 2013). Green biotechnology is modifying plant cells in certain food to include nutrients that cannot be received in that part of the world (Peters, 1993). Green Biotechnology is a very important aspect due to the fact that plants are renewable resources. Green biotechnology is important to extending the age in humans because new medicines will prevent disease.
