Christianity - Ethiopia and Charlemagne's Empire

Under the rule of Charlemagne the Frankish kingdom began to largely expand and as it defeated civilizations and gained new territories the christian culture would spread to these newly conquered areas. Another significance in Charlemagne's empire was that in 800 he was crowned in Rome by the Pope giving him the title of the holy Roman emperor. This is significant because Charlemagne would go on to have many long conquests and this would lead to additional spreading of christian ways. For example, " Charlemagne ruled for over forty years, often traveling 2,000 miles a year on campaigns of plunder and conquest".3 Charlemagne's empire never grew to be too large and although his empire seems less impressive when compared to that of Islamic rulers it was Charlemagne's empire that was pivotal in spreading christianity in western Europe. .
With the spreading of christianity in Ethiopia and Charlemagne's empire the christian views began shaping peoples lives as well as influencing the Ideologies of their rulers. In Ethiopia christianity not only affected spiritual life but it also shaped social life and intellectual life, including literature and arts. For example, " Ethiopia's acceptance of christianity led to the production of ecclesiastical documents and royal chronicles, making Ethiopia the first black African society that can be studied from written record".4 These documents and written records are very significant because it would end up giving historians critical information about ethiopian culture. " Other than Ethiopia, early African societies left no written accounts of their institutions and cultures, so modern scholars rely for information on the chronicals of travelers and merchant".5 This information allowed historians to get a more clear idea about ethiopian culture without the bias of the explorers story. In Charlemagne's empire christianity affected the peoples lives in much different manner.
