Reconstruction Essay

This led to sharecropping. This is a system of agriculture in which land owners allow a tenant to use the land in return for a portion of the cops produced on the land. This was a problem because the land owners took advantage of the African Americans, changing them high rent and not giving them enough for there crops. This led to the newly freed slaves finding themselves in very high debt. So high that they could not get out of it. This was almost another form of slavery all over again. Another part of this new freedom was creating new laws. Jim Crowe laws were racial regulation laws that were part of the state and local level. .
On March 27th 1876, the Supreme Court decided on Cruikshank case. This is debatably one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in history. The court decided that the three men who massacred almost 300 African Americans who were defending a local courthouse were innocent. This was a huge problem because this went against the 14th amendment which set out to protect its citizens from criminal acts and civil wrongs. In this case, they did not carry out their constitutional duty which shows that the 14th amendment meant little in this point in history. .
United States vs. Reese was a case in 1876 that was caused by a Kentucky electrical officer who refused to register an African American's vote in an election. This case narrowly defined the terms of the 15th amendment that probated the government from stopping anyone to vote based on their race, color, or condition of servitude. Now that African Americans were able to vote, many people saw this as a high threat. To disfranchise blacks from voting, Grandfather Clauses were put in place. These included poll taxes, which were a flat fee due before voting. These fees could range as high as two hundred dollars. This was abolished in 1964 by the 24th amendment. Another way of limiting votes was by literacy tests. Most African Americans did not know who to read or write.
