Altruism or Reciprocity

However, the main issue that triggers the debate as whether there exists a true altruistic is the possibility or impossibility of helping others and getting nothing as a reward or benefit in return (Ahmad et al., 2011). .
The notion of altruism has a long historical background in ethics and philosophy. The term altruism was originally created in the 19th century by Auguste Comte, who was a renowned philosopher of science and a sociologist (Vander, 2008). The notion has become one of the major topics in the field of psychology, especially among researchers in the fields of evolutionary psychology and evolutionary biology. Even though the concept of altruism in one field of study can have impact on other fields of study, different focuses or methods used in these fields of study always lead to different perceptions on altruism. Explained in simple terms, altruism is a concept used to refer to the welfare of other people and actions aimed at helping other people. However, the issue is not just about other people's welfare and helping them, but it about not receiving benefits from addressing other people's welfare (Bell, 2008).
According to Ruston et al. (2007), a person may behave altruistically in one context and reciprocally in another situation. Nevertheless, some people tend to behave more altruistically while others behave more reciprocally. The concept of altruism may be considered a general behavior in the cases whereby altruism has been considered an individual's trait. However, the study conducted by David et al. (2009) indicates that the altruism character is half-inherited. The study showed that genetic differences accounts for about 20 percent of variations in people. This explains the reason a person can inherit altruistic behavior of his or her parents. It is a bit challenging to tell whether anyone possess the trait of altruism. However, it is a fact that everyone has higher probability of portraying reciprocity in things they do to other people.
