On August 26, 1910 in Uskub, Ottoman Empire, a wonderful leader named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born. Agnes was well- raised as a Roman Catholic and devoted her life to God at such a young age. Later in her life, she took her vows as a nun and accepted the name Teresa after Saint Therese of Lisieux. Sister Teresa was afterwards diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent to Darjeeling, India for some rest and recuperation. It was on that train ride to Darjeeling that Sister Teresa felt God calling her to help the poor in India. She received some basic medical training then set out to aid the sick and the poor. She had very little support and, while trying to feed and help the poorest of the poor, she herself was constantly hungry and even had to beg for food. Soon, other women followed Sister Teresa in her mission "to take care of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout the society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone" as she worded it.
