Is US Still the Land of Opportunity

As a result, the demand for college-educated and shilled labor increased while the need for semi-skilled, middle level managers, supervisors and clerical jobs decreased. Particularly in manufacturing, information workers amount to 46% of total employment by 2000, from 28% in 1950 and blue-collar production employee sum up to 52%, down from 70% in 1950. This shows that the job opportunities for information workers is increasing. The growth in employment of information workers resulted from two roots. Firstly, the technological change in the industry level favor information workers rather than non-information workers, which is caused by the increase in advanced and sophisticated techniques of production that requires a particular set of skills. Secondly, industries with thorough use of information workers mostly rely on service and goods-processing workers. If we look at the industry changes in information employment, we can see that in 2000, the industries that had the highest percentage of data and information workers, around 87% were in fields such as finance, insurance and real estate. The next in line was the trade sector at 61%, then came business and other works at 45%, communications and transportation services at 39%, 38% in government sector and between 14% and 28% in agriculture, construction and manufacturing. The econometric methods were used to analyze the sources of growth of information workers in industries. First, the technological activity was evaluated, then investments in computerization were made and finally, international competitiveness was also determined (Wolff, 2006).
Today, many students from different countries are pursuing further education in US universities which are the main providers of higher education all over the world (Kim & Zhu,2010, p.163) Why do international students spend money and came all the way from different parts of the world, sometimes from the opposite side of the world, to study in the US? Simply because US education is the best.
