King Lear and the Earl of Gloucester

 


             The two older daughters, Gonerill and Regan were wicked. They exaggeratedly telling him that they love him more than anything.
             However, Lear's youngest and the favorite daughter response: "Nothing, my lord". .
             She says "I cannot heave my heart into my mouth: I love your majesty According to my bound, no more nor less". This show that she is honest and true by telling him the truth that she love him as a king and her father, but as a proud king he was mad at her straightforwardly answer. .
             Even more truthfully, she says "Why have my sisters husbands, if they say they love you all? Happily, when I shall wed, that lord whose hand must take my plight shall carry half my love with him, half my care and duty. Sure, I shall never marry like my sisters". It implied even more straightforward and also show that she know how wickedness her sisters are which Lear could not distinguish the good and bad from his mental blindness due to his pride. .
             The madness occurred when deny and banish the only loyal daughter Cordelia, because he judges people from the surface due to his lack of sight. He drive her away from his kingdom when he claim: "Here I disclaim all my paternal care, propinquity and property of blood, and as a stranger to my heart and me hold this from thee for ever.", "Better thou hadst not been born" and "for we have no such daughter, nor shall we ever see that face of hers again". Therefore be gone without our grace, our love, our benison.".
             Likewise, Kent a loyal Earl who able to see Cordelia's true love toward the blind king. When Lear gets mad from Cordelia, Kent tries to convince him to see which daughter really love him. Instead of open his eyes to see the truth, Lear response by saying "Out of my sight" when Kent reminds Lear that "See better, Lear, and let me still remain the true blank of thine eye".
             Unexpectedly, as a loyal fellow Kent disguises himself to help Lear because he knew Lear was blind from his arrogant.
