Racism and Diversity in College

No matter how the topic is brought up, diversity is a touchy subject. It is something that people are all aware of, yet it rarely seems to be brought up in a positive way. Diversity is usually described along with the down falls and struggles within communities. In the article "The Downside of Diversity " by Michael Jonas, he talks about how Robert Putnam's experiment done about diversity suggests that more diverse communities struggle to come together as a community. Author of "Camus Racism 101 ", Nikki Giovanni suggests something along the same lines as Putnam. She does this by often having a sarcastic response to the questions regarding diversity. An example of this would be what white and black college students ask and how a black student may sarcastically answer. "Q: Why do all the black people sit together in the dining hall? A: Why do all the white people sit together? " (Giovanni). The same questions are being asked, but the problem is few actually try to find a solution or make a change, leaving the different groups divided because of diversity. .
Education should not be something divided into black and white. We live in a colorful world and each color should be embraced for what it has to offer our world. Rather than worrying about keeping themselves separated, people should worry about ways they could come together as a school and a community to tackle the issue at hand. If diversity is tackled one community at a time then it would no longer be viewed as an issue. Right now, different is still something that is not welcomed or embraced in many communities.
It is said that areas that are more diverse do not take the needed steps to help themselves. A scientist Robert Putnam did a study on the diversity effects within a community. Scientist Robert Putnam states that once his findings were released, he had a fear of "people only hearing what they wanted to " (Jonas). The topic of diversity is already a sensitive topic.
