Racism and Diversity in College

If something is being said about it that those involved don't like, often time it is believed that the people just block it out. The truth is ignored in many cases. In neighborhoods, you usually find people with similar backgrounds and diversities. Social classes tend to determine where people live within a neighborhood and this makes the dividing of diversity stronger. In Jonas's article, Putnam also stated that neighborhoods with more diversity are usually less well off. "The communities with greater populations have greater income ranges, and higher crime rates " (Jonas). This leaves friendships and religious congregations to gather and be an active role in the community, making more people vote and being around more people like them. .
Even though Putnam's findings suggest that diverse communities struggle to come together, my experience within my community proves otherwise. I live in a neighborhood that is very diverse. We all know each other and we participate in neighborhood events and town gatherings. Being from a diverse area brought all of us together. We all seemed to have the same struggles; this is something that brought us together. Rather than being torn apart by our differences, we come closer. It was often a sense of curiosity that brought the community close. It would start with school activities and travel into the community, creating friendships that appeared unaware of the diverse differences each person had. The community worked together to solve any problems that may arise from the vast differences they faced.
To receive help, one must ask. If the situation a person is in is not liked by that person, they should change it. They should do what they can to help themselves and if that doesn't work, they should ask for help. This seems to be something Giovanni stresses as well as believes strongly. She wants there to be no reason for white people to look down upon black people.
