Darkness of the Middle Ages

 

            The Middle Ages were a difficult time for Europe. The Crusades, Black Death, and the Barbarian Invasions all occurred during the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was also labeled as the Dark Ages. However, there are some who disagree with this label since there were also achievements that would lead to the revival of the civilization and they are wrong. The Middle Ages should be known as the Dark Ages because the chaos that occurred during that time.
             The Crusades was a series of wars that were fought over the ownership of the Holy Land and Jerusalem. The crusades were fought between the Holy Roman Empire and the Muslims that had control of Jerusalem. The first Crusade began when the Seljuk Turks took control of the Holy Land and didnt want the Christian to live on the land more. Byzantine Emperor Alexius the first received assistance from the Pope and formed and army to help push the Seljuk Turks out of the Holy Land. Throughout the series of wars the Muslims were the victor. This shows that the Middle Ages should be known as the Dark Ages.
             The Black Death also known as the Bubonic Plague was a horrific disease that spread throughout Europe from 1347 to 1350. During that time there was no cure and it was highly contagious. The Black Death killed about one third of Europe's population according to History.com. Ring around the rosy, a common nursery rhyme describes the Black Death. As stated in document 5, Ring around the rose refers to rosary beads which were supposed to provide God's help. Pocket full of Posies refers to the flowers that were used to stop the odor of decaying bodies. Ashes, ashes! refers to cremation of dead bodies. We all fall down! refers to the result of the Black Death. This is another example that the Middle Ages should be known as the Dark Ages.
             The Barbarian Invasions were this series of invasions that targeted the western part of the Roman Empire. Life during the Barbarian Invasions was horrible.
