The plot is well known around the world and shows that even though one may struggle to do everything correctly, "if something is written" than it will happen. The only negative character in this story is Oedipus´ actual father who ordered to have the boy killed and then in a karmic twist got killed by his son as foretold, the rest of the characters have no personal blame for what was to occur. .
In other words the shepherd who saved the boy, Oedipus running from Corinth, Jocasta marrying the man who she fell in love with and who saved the state; all had very noble motivations. Unfortunately, and ironically, all of their actions led to the realization of the prophecy and the subsequent unfolding tragedy. The realization of the prophecy nevertheless, did not necessarily mean a tragedy. Had everyone remained ignorant regarding the matter they could have lived happily ever after or at least until DNA was discovered. However, the entire play actually concentrates on Oedipus discovering what actually happened.
It is beyond any doubt that both Othello and Oedipus were men of honour and that they would both uphold justice and honesty. In Oedipus this is manifested through his desire to find out the truth. He is at first certain that everything is in order and is joyous when his adoptive father dies, nevertheless by the time Jocasta realizes what has happened and runs away into the palace, so does Oedipus but he continues to hang to a thread until the shepherd finally clarifies everything. Nevertheless, had he not been a man of honour he might have conducted his investigation differently and avoided the tragedy. In this sense he is similar to Othello his strong not to say stubborn sense of honour stops him from thinking practically and acting in the best interest of all. .
It may have been wrong but avoiding the truth would have saved Oedipus the family and the state. Instead the revelation of the truth will bring on many tragedies that will influence and bring death to the family and conflict between Antigone and Creon.
