Summary of Oryx and Crake

When Crake a former Pro-Choice advocate realizes this reality, it was too late. Life as he knew it, no longer existed. It was he and his friend Jimmy that were the only people here to roam the earth after being successful research scientists. They could not procreate together and knew they would die and the earth would cease. It was then Crake discovered a way to create a new world, and have earth rejuvenate as though it were Spring. Although Crake was, a researcher he was also a pro-choice activist during the time when the earth was full of human life and no one cared to wonder what exactly was going on in the research labs. He knew humans would always find a way to win the life battle and therefore, he never paid much attention to anti-abortionists and crazy rants. Besides, he was a stem cell researcher, he felt this had nothing to do with abortion, and, therefore, he did not have time to worry, he was busy creating new ways to create skin for burn victims, to clone eyes that could blind people see; some for the first time. He was helping humanity and did not care, or worry if a woman was in an abortion clinic. There would be more children to come what does one possible life matter, he thought. .
Jimmy was Crake's childhood friend, and he too grew up to become a researcher. However, Jimmy's research was of a different nature. Jimmy would create diseases to see what, if any, cures he could develop to help those that suffer from these debilitating diseases. He was also testing existing drugs to see if they could cure new diseases as well as old. The animal activists had finally won their war and researchers could no longer test drugs, diseases and other things on any animals. Moreover, they could not test on anyone or anything that could not give written consent. Human testing became more and more of the norm in the world. People were out of work due to layoffs, desperate for money and willing to make it in any way they could.
