Education - Students and IEP's

Mrs. T first said that the students outside lives heavily impact them each and every day and often when they encounter problems such as not having enough money for dinner, school work doesn't seem as important as survival. Then when they come to class and act apathetic and lazy every day their core teachers label them as "incapable" or "emotionally disturbed." .
However, Mrs. Cohen who works more hands on with the students and their actual work on a daily basis, she said that the most common disabilities emotional disturbance; such as anxiety, bipolar, eating and psychotic disorders. However, Mrs. T says that at Hicksville disorders such as Dyslexia, shockingly, and Autism are two that are not common and not encountered. In my opinion, when speaking to both teachers in my classroom, I think that the persistent emotional disability present in the classroom says a lot about the students and faultily. If a student had autism or a disability that required extra care and attention, I do not think that Hicksville high school has nor the funds nor accommodations to help the student with their special needs. The common disabilities such as, bipolar disorder and anxiety, are heavily present in the classroom because the students home environments heavily influence them and do give them more problems to deal with in the classroom and daily lives. I learned from both Mrs. T and Mrs. Cohen, that after the student gets evaluated by a doctor or psychologist, the school reviews the students problem and through the districts special education program, regal teachers and representatives of the city, the students gets special accommodations or a special program depending on what is necessary according to them. In my opinion, I did not think that the range of disabilities was so common in this high school and so prevalent amongst the students. However, I do feel that after speaking with both teachers, that the majority of the foreign language students often get mislabeled with having a disability.
