Immigrants and Limited English Skills

It is a very common limitation for a non-native speaker in the United States that speak with a very limited English. Limited English ability affects an immigrant's life in several ways: having a non-bright academic achievement, not obtaining a good job, and not having an expressive command in English. The first effect of limited English ability of an immigrant life is having a non-bright academic achievement. Generally, an immigrant knows very limited English. They do not understand the classroom routine. The collections of new vocabularies and lack of grammar knowledge are very inadequate to write a good paper on the test. Therefore, it brings very low marks in the test. For an instance, a survey shows that Asian students are getting rewarded for doing better in Math and Science but not in English. In addition, an immigrant most of the time of a day speaks in their mother tongue at home other than English. As a consequence, his English speaking ability never improves in that way. This environment decreases his English speaking skill. In the United States in a Bangladeshi family, all family members speak their own language and they expect that their little children will also speak their native language. Nevertheless, all the children who go to school, they learn English in school, but cannot practice English at home. This simultaneous environment makes them overwhelmed. As a result, their language development process gets stuck in this situation. This reason is also affecting their classroom performance. As a result, they could not do well in the exam. In a short, lack of English knowledge and non-English environment at home is causing them a non-bright academic achievement.
Another effect of limited English ability of an immigrant life is not obtaining a good job. America is going through with recession for a long time. In this situation, the job market is very competitive and everybody needs to prove his Excellence to make his own position.
