Emotions, Memory and Propranalol

This would certainly qualify for pharmaceutical intervention in my book. The other events that were triggered by this, such as her abusive boyfriend and drug abuse, may have been avoided entirely if the pain from the memories of the sexual abuse had been lessened. .
When my mom was sixteen years old, her and her parents were on their way home from a baseball game. It was dark outside and her father was thoroughly exhausted. My mom noticed this and spoke up, however her father's pride prevented him from pulling over and letting his wife take the wheel. Eventually the road became curvy. The driver's eyes were growing heavier and heavier. All of a sudden the road took a sharp turn but the car kept going straight, directly over a small cliff and into a lake. Almost immediately my mom and her parents found themselves immereged underwater, desperately grasping for air. They struggled for what felt like hours and the doors of the car eventually gave way, allowing the three to escape the vehicle without serious injury. My mom and her mom were untouched, but her father had shards of glass in his hands and arms. Fortunately, they were alright. I would describe this event as a "borderline experience." It was certainly emotionally damaging, but not enough to justify memory altercation. I believe that if one of them turned out more injured, or even dead, then this occurrence would have had more of an impact on their lives and it would qualify for pharmaceutical intervention. .
The decision to begin using a drug that could potentially alter one's memory is tough one, mostly because our memory is an uncontrollable, fragile thing that only we ourselves can imagine. A doctor cannot simply take a scalpel and cut off a section of it, eradicating it completely. To toy with one's mind is a serious issue, however I believe each person should be able to make that decision for themselves. Some call Propranalol the miracle drug, and although I do believe it can be very useful, I also think each person should take the proper precautions.
