America and the Fear of Communism

Also in 1948, under the Truman Doctrine, the United States pledged to support any person, anywhere, who was resisting, "armed minorities, or outside pressures", like the communists. However, Greece and Western Europe couldn't avoid the chaos of communism spreading. Many Western European countries were a mess of poverty and homeless, which led to the fear all around the world. Truman's Marshall Plan called for substantial financial assistance to rebuild Western Europe to reduce the threat of communist revolution. During the same year, June 24, 1948, Americans and British officials started the Berlin airlift to break the blockade. For 347 days, they made 277,000 flights and landed every few minutes to Western Berlin to give tons of supplies as following: food, clothes, medicines, fuel, and Christmas presents (Doc D). Finally in 1949, NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was formed. It was an international military alliance between American and West European countries and it was the first time the U.S.A entered a military alliance. Their goal was to defend against any Soviet's threat or force. Although, America was aiding any countries where there was a threat of communism, for some countries it did not work out well and only increased the fear. For example, Mao Zedong from China also converted his country to communism, even though America and Chiang Kai-Shek tried to block this from happening. Then China had a large role in spreading communism to Korea (Doc H). Eventually, in 1950, Korea had to divide up into two countries, by the 38th parallel. As South Korea being the capitalist country, and North Korea being the Communist country. America aided many countries by slowing the spread of communism however there were other countries where the spread of communism could not be stopped. This caused the fear of Communism in America to grow. .
When the fear of communism started to spread all around the world, America was also impacted.
