The Struggles of Technology

In order for a society to function new things have to keep evolving. The truth is that human beings get bored with the same traditional concepts. They need more and so they seek more; from this the internet was born into American culture. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing though, that is what is constantly up for debate. While the web is helpful because it gives fast results, it's leading to a change in the work ethic of Americans that is creating a culture of laziness. Technology has led to a decline in originality and the capability for people to think for themselves is continuing to diminish. .
I think it's safe to say that the citizens of this society tend to lean towards the demanding side. Demanding does not necessarily have a negative connotation it just means that culture has needs that they expect to be met. Fast results are the things that everyone is after; people are always looking for the easiest way out. Some will argue that this is not a bad thing because it just means efficient work and the spread of knowledge. Steven Pinker makes claims at this in his article "Mind Over Mass Media"; "To encourage intellectual depth, don't rail at PowerPoint or Google. It's not as if habits of deep reflection, thorough research and rigorous reasoning ever came naturally to people" (386). People believe that search engines shouldn't be ridiculed because they are simply ways of researching information. Here, however, is where the real problem arises. While search engines may be good sources to find information, when those sources are overused that is what promotes a lack of initiative within the culture.
Before the internet was given life people were required to spend hours upon hours trying to do simple research. We now have the capability to get those results in mere minutes. While this is a great advancement within society, like anything else in the world it has the power to be abused.
