the horse is the mind and the other is the body. Therefore, for plato the soul is trapped inside the psychical body and can only free itself by rising upwards to the eternal world of the forms. .
In christianity they believe that each person has an immortal soul which makes us different from animals. St Paul, an early christian leader taught that the body and the soul are in conflict because the soul wants to be with God and wants to do what is right but sometimes the body prevents this from happening. Christians believe that we are made in the image of God or 'Imago Dei' and that when God made Adam he 'breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being' and this is why christians believe that we are sacred (holy) because 'God created man in his own image'. .
Jews also say that God has created man and out-of-man (women) to be equal and to be God's image. Jews say that man and women are equal as the story of Adam and Eve shows that 'God took Eve from Adams side' and they are both needed for the fuller picture of Gods image. However, even though we are made in God's image we are free to choose and make our own decisions. It is said that we are free to reject a relationship with the creator in whose image they are made and this is shown in the story of Adam and Eve. Those religious believe that choosing to have a relationship with God is the only way to life a happy life beyond death. For Paul, the faithful will enjoy enter life, but those who don't know Christ will 'be punished with everlasting destruction'. Jesus declared: 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one gets to the father except through me'. Within christianity, Roman catholics believe that the souls of those who have not sinned since their last confession will go straight to heaven; the souls of those who have sinned will go to purgatory; a place between heaven and hell, where their souls will be cleansed.
