Short Story - Shattered Flames

 

The office staff was on a first name basis that seemed to cut through the neckties and suites, making the work area a comfortable place to be, in fact, the lunchroom was catered with coffee, doughnuts and muffins, that seemed never to run out at any given part of the day. With this in mind, the feeling that everything was looking good for the better change in my circumstances. .
             It had been about three months on the job and everything seem to be going well, beside the rain that had a mind of it's own and was calling the shots, as to how and when it was going to drench the area with a mini flood. You see living in California's Mojave Desert, to some known as the High Desert is not for everyone, I believe you must acquire the taste for dry, sandy landscape, Joshua trees, and high winds, in addition to the weather, heat, freezing cold conditions, and rain storms that hit the area at a moments notice, accompanied with lighting and thunder, this will either make you love it or hate it. This one particular morning, somewhere in the month of September before going to work I happen to glance out of window in the living room, the sun was partly covered with dark clouds that seemed to dance in motion with the wind, my first thoughts was to call a co worker and see if we could ride to work together, on the other hand, being late for work was not a option. If I would start out for work at that moment, I would arrive on time, so putting on my coat, and grabbing the umbrella that stood by the front door, I started walking quickly to work avoiding the storm. .
             Arriving at work on time put a smile on my face, and greeting co-workers with a good spirit on such a gloomy morning was much appreciated. For some odd reason the stock workers were in the library storage room, moving items from one room to another, the radio was playing music usually loud from the back of this room, this was a room were additional school material such as books that had been bar coded, copies of work sheets that were categorize according to lesson plans on just about every subject, for teachers to retrieve at their leisure.
