Women's rights were just now starting to go into effect but the civil rights movement will not start for another 20 years. You can tell by the background of the image that she already doesn't have much to begin with. The items to the right of her are slightly in focus but everything to the left is blurred out. The way the background is shown it seems to say that she has things but not many things. From what we can see there is a bucket and some cloth on top of what seems to be a dresser drawer. The small chair she's sitting upon is a small wooden thing that looks a bit old and fairly used. The space looks very small and enclosed which suggests that the living area may not be much bigger. So along with being oppressed in more ways than one this woman doesn't have much. So why with all of that, is she so happy? .
As I've learned from various resources, motherhood conveys a sense of unconditional love. Unconditional love is defined as affection or love without limitations or conditions but it's said you won't really know its meaning until you have a child. Some mothers say their children are their reason for being strong. Others say they've changed their lives for the better or they make them want to be and do better in life. The look on the mothers face shows all of those things in one. The way she is looking down at her child and smiling shows us her happiness, and how her love for her child is greater than her current circumstance. Right now nothing can get to her because her child means more to her than anything in the world . .
We also notice that the father of the child is not present in the image. If you look closely at the bottom center of the image you will notice a ring on her ring finger. The ring represents the man in her life who we presume is the father of the child. I'm sure the love they share brings her happiness but in this moment he is nonexistent. In the second image, we see a woman lying on a bed and holding her newborn child.
