Including Culture in EFL Teaching

Purba (2011) asserted when saying "He needs to be ware, for example, of the culturally appropriate ways to address to people, express gratitude, make request, and agree or disagree with someone." (p. 45). Getting the right form to address to people can be reached by learning the intonation used in different places. Related to this Purba (2011) reasoned that "He should know that behaviors and intonation patterns that are appropriate in his own speech community may be perceived differently by members of the target language speech community" (p.45). Besides that, there are some places where the same word can have different meanings. This is the case of the word "pants". In North America it means "trousers" but in the United Kingdom its mean is "underpants". If you announce to your new British friend you bought a great new pair of rubber pants you could get an embarrassing misunderstanding.
Having a better comprehension of foreign behaviors is another important reason why students should be taught about culture when learning a new language. EFL teacher would like their student to comprehend foreign behavior for three main reasons: to reflect about cultural values of other societies, to appreciate foreign traditions and to facilitate the successful interrelationship with native speakers of the language being taught. As Purba (2011) pointed out "Linguistics and anthropologist have long recognized that the forms and uses of a given language reflect the cultural values of the society in which the language is spoken." (p. 45). This means that, by knowing the values a society has people can infer the way in which they have to make use of the language. By knowing about the culture represented in a foreign language students not only learn new symbols to communicate but also new values to practice indoors and outdoors. In addition, by teaching culture, teachers approach students to foreign traditions; so that, they can understand the reasons why foreigner practice them.
