This adoption method creates a way to lessen the separation anxiety that the birth parents and adoptee feel. The birth parents know the type of people they are giving the child away to and know that they are able to communicate and be there for the child when needed. Unlike the closed adoption, this method, which accounts for "70% of domestic adoptions" (Gray 27), is considered to be "a more nature relationship among all members of the adoption triad"( Siegel 19); this is completely opposite of the concept of closed adoption.
There are crucial reasons why a child is placed for adoption by their birth parents. Common reasons why people choose adoption are because of an unwanted pregnancy, improper home environment, and victims of rape. Unwanted pregnancies are when a woman wasn't trying to get pregnant but ended up being pregnant. This happens through unprotected sex and irresponsibility. Most commonly in America we see that through the rapid growing rate of teenage pregnancies. Young girls believing that they know everything about sex and not protecting themselves from guys they barely know and soon they have a child on the way. This ties into the financial burden aspect. At that age, young girls don't have the type of money to support themselves let alone a child. The guys they are usually with are in the same predicament as the girls; no money. Having no money leads to an improper home environment. An improper home environment comes from money as well as the parents having addiction to drugs or alcohol. Mothers or fathers who are addicted to drugs and alcohol know they are unable to take care of a child and in return, choose to give it up for adoption. Some couples are in a situation where the father is in jail and isn't able to be there for his girlfriend or the child; making it impossible to create a joint income or have any type of stability of having two parents in the household.
